Basically, Cambridge Analytica was collecting user information via Facebook and sold the information for political advertising.

If you’re on a free social platform, Facebook, Twitter, Google, YouTube, or whatever, and you’re using their platform and services FOR FREE, you are the product. Your information and engagement IS the product. Your information is already in the market freely available to whoever willing to pay.

If Chinese government care about what kind of porn you watch or what kind of rage bait video you “like,” or what product you purchased on Amazon, or what advertising that causes you to pause your scrolling for 3 seconds, they don’t need to make a billion-dollar platform and host all your data in Texas to gather that information. They can buy them from Meta.

Your information is already readily available to anyone who is willing to pay for it.
